At the Belconnen Orthodontic Centre we are able to take orthodontic x-rays in our office using a state of the art Cone Beam, 3D imaging machine, I-CAT. I-CAT provides high-definition digital imaging that allows the orthodontist to base your treatment plan on more accurate information. In addition, I-CAT uses minimal radiation to create the image and a typical scan time takes only 8.5 seconds.
What is a Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scanner?
Decades of advancements in dental and medical technology have allowed the CBCT to be developed and regarded today as one of the most advanced methods of capturing 3D images of patients. The technology captures hundreds of x-ray images in seconds.
The I-CAT scanner rotates around the patient, allowing for a complete 360 imaging of the target scan. This technology is superior in comparison to a conventional x-ray machine which only captures a 2 dimensional snapshot and would not allow the orthodontist to discern varying density of tissue and analyse the image from various angles. With the I-CAT imaging machine, the orthodontist can analyse the scan virtually layer by layer and from any angle, which allows for more accurate analysis and diagnosis when assessing and planning treatment options for the patient.
Should I prepare ahead of time for the scanning? Does it hurt?
There is absolutely nothing to worry about with the I-CAT scanner. A patient simply comes to our x-ray room, sits on the provided chair in the machine, allows the scanner to rotate around the head, and that's it! The entire scanning process lasts under 40 seconds at the maximum and usually takes only 8.5 seconds. It is absolutely painless and speedy.
During the scan it is important that you stay still to create the best scan possible without distortions.
Glasses, hair cosmetics such as pins and clips, hats, jewellery must be removed prior to the scanning, as they will cause the machine to return with inaccurate results.
I'm worried about radiation. Is there a lot of radiation emitted from the I-CAT machine?
Radiation emitted from the I-CAT scanner is significantly lower than a standard medical CT scanner. Additionally, a patient is typically exposed to the radiation for only 8.5 seconds which further minimises radiation exposure to the patient. Radiation exposure is incredibly low, considering the hundreds of images are captured within seconds.
What are the benefits to the I-CAT scanner?
The main advantage of I-CAT is the detail that it provides and its accuracy. I-CAT improves orthodontic diagnosis and treatment by providing the multiple projection perspective necessary to accurately assess tooth relationships and further support the objective interpretation of anatomy. In addition, I-CAT delivers precise 3D views of impacted teeth within the bone, location relative to adjacent teeth, and proximity to vital structures. I-CAT also allows the orthodontist to detect and evaluate problems before they become serious by accurately measuring them as the I-CAT provides 1:1 measurements. This is unlike the 2-dimensional OPG and LATERAL CEPH x-rays that have distortion in the image and cannot provide an accurate 1:1 image.
The I-CAT scanning is incredibly quick and easy and in addition the scanner is present in our practice making it convenient for our patients.
